I love the story of the Samaritan woman because there is so much to be discovered through it. I also love it because God uses a sinful woman to teach us about salvation.
In John 4:19-38 the story of the Samaritan woman continues. Jesus had just told the woman that he knows she doesn’t technically have a husband, but she has had five and she’s living with another man right now. Jesus revealed the Samaritan woman’s sin, and at that moment she knew he was something special. She calls him a prophet and then asks how she can worship God. Jesus responds:
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:24
Then their interaction becomes even more interesting.
“The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am he.’”
John 4:25-26
In that moment, Jesus reveals himself as the promised Messiah. This is the first time recorded in scripture that he directly reveals that he is the Messiah. Jesus could have revealed this to Nicodemus, the Pharisees, or any number of more “holy” people, but he chose the Samaritan woman at the well with a questionable past.
She was so moved by her conversation with Jesus and the knowledge that he was the Messiah that she left her water jug and ran into the village to tell everyone about the Christ. The Samaritan woman’s encounter with Christ changed her.
Sister, please know that no matter where you come from or what your past looks like, Jesus still wants to reveal himself to you as your Messiah.
